Boundary infostructures aim to enable pragmaticinteroperability so the intended effect of acommunication is the same as its actual effect. Theyare built from networks of boundary objects. Theseare objects that are flexible enough to be used inmore than one context and to communicate betweencontexts. They include terminology systems,information architecture standards, andrepositories. In this age of eHealth and chronicdisease management, we need tools to mediatelearning at the boundary between and among differentcommunities of practice. Topic maps are used torepresent the boundary infostructures and provide acommon point of reference for clinicians, healthinformaticians, administrators, medical educatorsand patients. This work illustrates how a boundaryinfostructure was constructed and how it improvedcommunication about patients with chronic disease.
