Ecophysiology of Enset

Climate change is one of the main global challenges in the 21 century. In order to adapt its adverse impacts the world is expected to look for diverse alternatives in terms of food/feed supply and protection of the environment. Enset (Ensete ventricosum (Welw.) Cheesman) is one of the most important candidate plants to tackle the impact of climate change. Enset is a multipurpose crop that is used for food, fiber, medicine, wrapping, storage,livestock feed, etc. The plant has many untapped potentials though its utilization as food is restricted only in Southern and Southwestern part of Ethiopia. It is a safeguard tree in the face of adverse environmental conditions because of its high productivity per unit of land, storage capacity for a long time without spoilage, use at any stage of development and resistance to climate fluctuations.
