Standards will define how a nation participates in §the global scene. In a world that is connected §electronically, there is no such thing as localized §communities and localized communication. Countries §that choose to operate using their own standards are §creating a local island that is isolated from the §global community. For nations to be globally §competitive, they must adopt global standards. Today §there is also an environment in our organizations §represented by islands of information. Information §cannot be exchanged easily. The information is §stored in computers that cannot talk to each other. §Archaic paper processes, lack of non-proprietary §international standards, and computer §interoperability deficiencies have created §cumbersome industry productivity problems. Millions §of dollars are lost each day due to inefficiencies §caused by paper processes and the inability for §computers to talk to each other. There is work in §the global international standards community to §resolve electronic communication with international §standards.
