Drawing on a detailed case study of Scotland's National Health Service, this book argues that debates about citizen participation in health systems are disproportionately dominated by techniques of invited participation. A 'system's-eye' perspective, while often well-intentioned, has blinded us to other relevant standpoints from which we might understand the relationship between publics and their health systems. Publics and Their Health Systems explores the realms of representative democracy and contentious protest politics. By drawing on the sociology of health and illness it also analyses the micro-level tactics which individual citizens use in their encounters with health services. Importantly, the book highlights the dynamics which are more oppositional and challenging than those within conventional approaches to citizen participation, but which must be understood in order to move towards a more inclusive and democratic health system.
