There is a growing demand that God be understood through anon-dualistic, non metaphysical discourse. This book tries to meetthe demand focusing on two contrasting postmodern features: theimpossibility of the gift in Derrida and unconditional givenness inMarion engaging with the critical response of Milbank. Based on thenegative understanding of God as \"wholly other,\" this bookexamines the (im)possibility of the gift as God?s giving inrelation to the (im)possibility of speaking of God with a criticaldiscussion of Marion?s iconic theology of the unconditional divinegift: the saturated phenomenon of givenness. While heavilyinfluenced by current developments in poststructuralism andphenomenological theories, it is ultimately motivated by aconstructive theological agenda. This book should help cast lighton a new understanding of ?Gift? or ?givenness? as an alternativediscourse of traditional ontological discourses in theology andshould be useful to theologians or seminarians and anyone inreligious studies and philosophy of religion who may be interestedin recent postmodern theologies and thoughts includingDeconstructive, Postmetaphysical and Radical Orthodoxy.
